Australian citizenship pathways
Australian parent at birth
If one of your parents was an Australian citizen at birth, then you are eligible and can apply for Australian citizenship.
Generally applications can be made online and all the relevant documentation uploaded. Occasionally, the Department will require DNA testing to prove parentage, this happens a lot where there is only 1 Australian citizen parent and the child is born in a country the Department deems to be high risk.

Permanent resident
If you are a permanent resident and can meet the residence test, generally you are eligible and can apply for Australian citizenship.
Generally applications can be made online and all the relevant documentation uploaded. Issues arise when permanent residents have criminal convictions or they are from countries with high levels of fraud and poor quality identity documents.

Eligible New Zealand citizen
If you are a New Zealand citizen and you were in Australia on or around 26 February 2001 and had been for at least 12 months, then you may be eligible for Australian citizenship.
Generally applications can be made online and all the relevant documentation uploaded. Issues arise when New Zealanders who have been in Australia but never claimed centrelink benefits apply for citizenship. Often it will be necessary to obtain their movement records to prove they were in Australia at the required time.
